Our Heritage

Celebrating over 100 years of trading and continuous business development, it is hardly surprising that Fyfes is Northern Ireland’s largest motor factor.
Now managed by the third generation of the Fyfe family, it has grown in size, developing more ranges, and improving its expertise. But where did it all begin?

Fyfes was founded in 1915 when brothers John and Michael opened a shoe shop in Broughshane Street, Ballymena. Among some of the original products stocked were Dunlop Wellington Boots. The brothers soon added Dunlop bicycle tyres, then other bicycle parts and repair equipment as demand grew.

Fyfes has always taken a progressive attitude toward business development, continually updating and enhancing its range of products. Thanks to this forward thinking, the business grew, and the company’s activities developed further, to stock motor parts and accessories.

By 1946, business had increased to such a level that a second shop was opened on Ballymoney Street, Ballymena to concentrate specifically on motor parts. By this time Kevin Fyfe, John’s son, had taken on the business. Under his guidance and entrepreneurial skills, Fyfes continued to expand, adding tools, welding supplies and paint products to the stock profile.

In 1974, a 20,000 sq ft purpose-built unit was opened at Pennybridge Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Ballymena, affording easy access to all areas of Northern Ireland. As the business expanded, so did the premises; a new returns and warranty parts department was added as well as an extension to the warehouse. The establishment in Pennybridge is now over 40,000 sq ft.

By the 1990s, the present Managing Director, Tony Fyfe had taken control of the company and to further develop the business and enhance customer service levels, a branch network was created throughout the province.

The Fyfes network now consists of 16 branches across Northern Ireland and in 2013 our sister company, Fyfes Car Parts Ireland, opened its doors in Drogheda, County Louth.

Under each generation of the Fyfe family, growth and success has increased. With a customer-focused business approach, products and ranges in stock are regularly reviewed to ensure Fyfes has got everything the market needs.

Fyfes continues to provide customers with a first class services, allowing us to become Northern Ireland’s largest motor factor. We hope our success will continue for years to come.
